House of Motion

Overlooking Hood River, this house is a hub for active guests. The unfinished basement was already being used as a hangout/storage area, but too many structural posts made it difficult to improve.

The solution was steel. Located on a steep hillside, access was difficult. Instead of renting an expensive crane and closing the street below, we cut a small hole in the siding and fed new beams into the basement from the driveway.

Featuring steel beams, concrete foundation walls and exposed ductwork, our industrial materials provide the backdrop for an unexpected palette that includes steel paneling, orange rubber and machined bamboo plywood.

The finished basement is a fully functioning living space including what may be the best seats in the house for watching the action at the waterfront below.
